The three storey building was lined with windows, all black except for one of them. Now, this is where it starts to get strange. Surely the location of a kidnapping had to hold something interesting? It had been so generic and uninteresting thus far that I hadn't even bothered to take any photographs.ĭesperate to find something, even if it was nothing more than a newspaper showing a date, I headed over to the final building. Presumably this was used for parts storage, so it would make sense that they'd been taken away years ago, but I still couldn't help feeling disappointed. Row upon row of tall metal shelves lined the room, but again there was nothing. I moved on to the next building, which wasn't a workshop as I'd originally believed but instead a sort of warehouse. It seemed strange, but I figured that it wasn't impossible that the buildings were already being prepared for demolition. No paper, no rubbish left on the floor even – I almost considered leaving at this point. It must have been fifty metres wide by about twenty metres long, but there was nothing but a thick layer of dust covering the floor and the rails. Dim light shone through the high dusty windows to reveal a huge, barren room. Once I got in through the unlocked metal door, it was completely empty, as though it had been stripped out a long time ago. I decided to visit the main workshop first it was the biggest building there and I assumed it would be the most interesting. I don't think there was anybody around to see me anyway. I climbed over the metal gate and followed the road, walking along the dirt to the side in an attempt to avoid being seen. I parked my car a short distance away from the depot and walked the remainder, up to the road leading into it. I packed my exploration rucksack with all the essentials a couple of torches, a respirator (asbestos and mould are both nasty stuff, and these old buildings are full of them), my Swiss army knife and my camera. I've spent the past week preparing whenever I've had the chance, checking satellite photos and any information I could find online to help me figure out an approach. It had never really interested me – after all, I thought, it's just a few workshops, there can't be that much to see – but it was recently announced that it's to be demolished after a missing child was found in the office building, so I figured I may as well pay it a visit. It had only been officially closed for for about five years, but I've lived here my entire life and it's stood unused for over 20 years. My most recent exploration was to an old unused rail maintenance depot. I like to rummage through the contents of abandoned buildings and learn their histories direct from the source. I'm an urban explorer, which means I like to explore the parts of the world ignored by people. I'm an occasional reader of this sub but I've never posted here before, and I certainly didn't expect my first posting to be like this.
